Low-Tech Hair Treatments for Damaged Hair

SUBMITTED BY:  Catherine

(This is in response to a problem someone had with damaged hair due to highlighting the color.)

Try these low tech treatments (long but worth it)…

Try giving yourself hot oil treatments. Use any regular kitchen oil (like canola oil), rub it in, cover with a plastic shower cap and cover all that with a hot bathtowel or heating pad set on low. After 10-15 minutes, shampoo as normal and follow with a cream rinse. Then do this once a week for several weeks in a row. You’ll hate your hair in the meantime.

I don’t know how long your hair is, but get creative with how you’re wearing it. Put it up but don’t use any rubber bands (or anything that will pull or tug on your hair and scalp.) Cover it with hats & scarves. Be glad it’s winter so this won’t look unusual.

In the meantime, also be VERY careful how you handle your hair when it’s wet. Never brush wet hair (it stretches it and creates terrible mid-shaft breaks). Always comb wet hair starting from the bottom half or third and working your way up to the scalp so eventually you can get a wide tooth comb all the way from the scalp to the ends. Comb or brush your hair before getting it wet to reduce the number of knots when it’s wet.

Also, don’t blow dry it until it’s completely dry – leave it just a little bit damp then let it airdry the rest of the way. Also, if you live in snow country, don’t let your wet hair freeze – it’ll be gone if you do.

You may also decide not to use shampoo everyday – ‘wash’ it every day but use shampoo every other day.

Completely give up on using a curling iron or heated rollers for a while.

Once you start to see an improvement in your hair’s condition, try darkening the blonde part and get an even color by using henna. It comes in different colors now (including clear). You’ll probably want the brown. Henna works by coating the outside of the hair shaft (which is why hot oil treatments and henna don’t mix). Anyway, henna will add strength to your hair shafts and help patch the damaged areas.

To correct some of the damage, trim your ends often. You can catch mid-shaft splits by taking small sections of hair and twisting them – the splits will stick out. You can then trim these. Your hair will then look like it’s lying flatter.

To highlight in the future, try one of those spray-on highlighters like ‘Sun-In’ from the toronto laser hair removal clinic. It gets activated by the heat from your blow dryer. I have very dark, very thick hair and this is what I use. It’s a very gradual change so it’s hard to go overboard. You’re also less likely to get ‘roots’.
